Do you need Form 1A for your Coimbatore renewal?
Your age decides it for a private licence, while a transport licence needs it at every renewal. A car or two wheeler licence calls for Form 1A at renewals from age 40, and a licence for taxis, lorries, buses or other transport vehicles calls for it each time.

Each renewal needs one, and so does an application for a transport learner's licence, a transport licence or an added transport class.

Form 1A is not needed for a private licence renewal under 40 (Rule 18(1)(d), as substituted by G.S.R. 240(E)), unless you are applying for an adapted vehicle licence due to a physical disability.
Tamil Nadu's official renewal page lists a Form 1A medical certificate among the documents for transport vehicle holders and for applicants above 40. The June 2024 announcement on Sarathi registered doctors named new licences as well as renewals.

How long the renewed licence lasts
Your age on the day you renew sets the validity of the new licence, under Section 14 of the Motor Vehicles Act as amended in 2019.

If your first licence came before you were 30 and you renew on time, Form 1A comes up at about 40, 50 and 60, and then every five years.

Tamil Nadu rules that apply in Coimbatore
In Tamil Nadu, Form 1A can be issued only by a doctor empanelled on Sarathi, registered with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council. The approval then happens on the portal, at the doctor's end.
Which doctor.
In June 2024 the State Transport and Road Safety Commissioner announced that only doctors registered with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council, and registered once on Sarathi, can issue and upload medical certificates for applicants above 40 seeking a new licence or a renewal.
How it reaches your application.
The doctor attests and approves Form 1A on the portal. That step works only when your Aadhaar is linked, with an OTP, to the mobile number you gave in the renewal application.
What the form itself says.
Its instruction reads: “To be filled in by a registered medical practitioner appointed for the purpose by the State Government or person authorised in this behalf by the State Government”.
How to get Form 1A online from Coimbatore

Questions to settle before you pay
Before paying, make sure your RTO has given no special instruction, your mobile number is Aadhaar linked, and the details on your Sarathi application are right.
“Will my RTO accept it?”
That depends on the RTO's rules. If your office has asked for a certificate from a particular doctor, follow that, because the ₹1,349 option is non refundable.
“How do I know the doctor is empanelled?”
You can look the doctor up on the National Medical Commission's Indian Medical Register or the Healthcare Professionals Registry. In Tamil Nadu, only a doctor empanelled on Sarathi can issue Form 1A.
“What if the doctor does not issue Form 1A?”
Issuing Form 1A is the doctor's decision. Payment of ₹1,349 for the process is non refundable, so there are no refunds, including when the certificate is not issued. Please read our refund and cancellation policy before you order.
“Can the doctor fix my address or photo?”
No. The doctor does not change the address, photo or other details on Form 1A, so check them against your Sarathi application first.
“My number is not linked to Aadhaar.”
Link it before you order. Without that link and the OTP, the doctor cannot approve Form 1A on the portal in Tamil Nadu.
How a Tamil Nadu renewal runs on Sarathi
Tamil Nadu renewals are applied for on Sarathi, and since 12 April 2022 the state has offered renewal as a contactless service that uses Aadhaar as identity. The state's renewal page says you have to apply online, and that documents can be uploaded and fees paid online.
Go to Sarathi and select Tamil Nadu from the list of states.
Choose the driving licence renewal service and enter the licence details it asks for.
If you use Aadhaar as identity for the contactless route, keep the phone with your Aadhaar linked number at hand for OTPs.
Complete the application.
Keep the application number, and download your Form 1A from your profile.
Have the doctor attest and approve Form 1A on the portal.
Pay the renewal fee online when Sarathi asks for it.
The RTO may still ask you to visit, for example when more than a year has passed since expiry and a driving test is due. Go by what your Sarathi screen shows. Official notices on the contactless services are posted in Tamil on tnsta.
Coimbatore RTOs and unit offices
Coimbatore has four Regional Transport Offices named for the city, according to Tamil Nadu's policy note on Motor Vehicles Acts Administration for 2023 to 24. Renewal is applied for online on Sarathi, so go to an office only if your RTO asks you to.

The policy note gives office names only, with no codes, addresses or areas served, so confirm an office's address before you travel.
Section 9(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, as amended in 2019, lets you apply for a driving licence to any licensing authority in the State.
Renewal fees and deadlines for Coimbatore drivers
Tamil Nadu's official renewal page lists ₹500 to renew a non transport licence and ₹450 to renew a transport licence. It does not say what these amounts include and shows no date, so confirm the total on Sarathi before you pay.

Time limits for renewing
Earliest:
one year before your licence expires.
On the expiry date:
the 30 day period in which an expired licence stayed valid ended with the 2019 amendment.
Within a year after expiry:
you can renew without a driving test.
After that:
renewal is refused unless you pass the test of competence to drive.
Reasons a Form 1A is held up or rejected in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, a Form 1A can be held up by a mobile number that is not Aadhaar linked, a doctor who is not on Sarathi, a certificate older than six months, or details that do not match your application.
Mobile number not Aadhaar linked.
Without the OTP on the number in your renewal application, the doctor cannot approve Form 1A on the portal.
Doctor not empanelled on Sarathi.
Only doctors empanelled on Sarathi (registered with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council and on Sarathi) can issue Form 1A in Tamil Nadu.
Certificate past six months.
Form 1A is valid for six months from issue, so check its date before you apply.
Details that do not match.
The doctor will not change the name, address, photo or other details on the Form 1A generated for your application, so check them against your Sarathi application before you order.
Application number.
Copy it exactly as Sarathi shows it when you fill in our order form.
Printout at the counter.
The digital copy is meant for online use only.
More than a year since expiry.
A driving test is needed as well.

The self declaration of physical fitness, once Form 1, was omitted in 2021 and now sits inside the application, Form 2. Form 1A is the separate medical certificate that a doctor attests.
For a renewal, use the Form 1A generated for your own application, because Rule 5(4) says Form 1A is issued electronically on the portal.
