Who needs Form 1A in Hyderabad
Two groups of Hyderabad drivers need Form 1A: private licence holders who renew at 40 or above, and transport licence holders and applicants of any age. Both cases come from Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rule 5 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
It applies when you are:
- renewing a non transport licence for a car or two wheeler after you have turned 40
- renewing a transport licence for a taxi, goods vehicle or bus, at any age
- applying for a learner's licence, a driving licence or an added class for a transport vehicle
- applying for a new driving licence at age 40 or above
- applying for an International Driving Permit (IDP)
Below 40, a private licence renewal needs no Form 1A, unless you are applying for an adapted vehicle licence due to a physical disability.

40 or 50: the Telangana age question
For a renewal, the age is 40. Telangana's licence renewal page asks for Form 1A when a non transport licence holder "has attained the age of forty years", which matches Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
A separate page on the same website, about getting a driving licence, still says applicants under 50 do not need a medical certificate. If you are renewing at 40 or older, plan on getting Form 1A.
How long your renewed licence lasts
Section 14 of the Motor Vehicles Act, as amended in 2019, ties the new expiry date to your age on the day of renewal.

Say you renew at 41. The new licence runs for ten years, and the renewal after that, at about 51, needs another Form 1A.

Form 1A rules in Telangana
Telangana's own renewal page asks for Form No. 1A on the same terms as the central rules: at every transport licence renewal, and for a private licence once the holder has attained forty.
Who signs it.
The official form says it is to be filled in by a registered medical practitioner appointed for the purpose by the State Government, or a person the State Government has authorised.
How it reaches the RTA.

What your office accepts.
Acceptance rests with your RTA office. Ask the office if you are unsure.
Form 1 is gone.
The state website still lists Form No. 1, the old self declaration, for renewal, but G.S.R. 240(E) omitted Form 1 with effect from 1 April 2021.
Physical fitness certificate or Form 1A?
These are two different documents. A physical fitness self declaration is your own statement about your health, while Form 1A is a medical certificate that a registered doctor completes.
The Telangana forms page still offers Form 1 and Form 1A as separate downloads. Form 1 was the self declaration. G.S.R. 240(E) omitted it from 1 April 2021, and the self declaration now sits in Form 2. At 40 or above, a downloaded Form 1 cannot take the place of Form 1A.
What Form 1A asks and certifies
The questions on Form 1A come from the national form in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. It covers vision, hearing and limbs, a few specific checks, and a fit or not fit conclusion.

Questions people ask before paying
Settle these points before you book, since the self test fee cannot be refunded.
"My RTA office wants a certificate from a government doctor."
Acceptance depends on your RTA office's rules, and our fee is non refundable, so ask the office before you pay.
"What if the doctor will not sign?"
Issuing Form 1A is the doctor's decision. Payment of ₹1,349 for the process is non refundable, so there are no refunds, including when the certificate is not issued. Please read our refund and cancellation policy before you order.
"Will the doctor fix a wrong address or photo?"
No. The doctor does not change the address, photo or other details on Form 1A. Fix them in your Sarathi application first.
"Can I complete Form 1A myself?"
No. You download it, but the medical sections and signature belong to a registered doctor.
"My licence lapsed more than a year ago."
Form 1A alone will not be enough. Section 15 also requires you to pass the test of competence to drive.
How Telangana renewal works on Sarathi
Telangana now handles driving licence renewal on Sarathi, the national licence portal. The transport department's online services site, tgtransport.net, tells users to go to Sarathi for learner licence, driving licence and conductor licence transactions, and the slot booking link on the state's renewal page leads to that same site.
Press reports from May 2026 say the state's Transport Commissioner announced 17 faceless licence services on Sarathi, renewal among them. The reports say applicants can complete the application from home using Aadhaar based authentication.
Go to Sarathi and pick Telangana from the list of states.
Open Services on DL (Renewal/
Duplicate/ AEDL/ IDP/ Others) under the Driving Licence menu, or use the Apply for DL Renewal link. Choose the renewal service and fill in the application as the screens ask.
Note your application number. If you lose it, try the Find Application Number option under Others.
Download the Form 1A generated for your application, have it attested by a doctor, and upload the signed copy.
Pay the renewal fee and user charges when the application asks for them.
An RTA office can still call you in, for instance for a driving test if your licence expired more than a year ago. Go by the labels on your screen.
Hyderabad RTA offices and TG codes
Hyderabad district has five zonal RTA offices: Central at Khairatabad, North at Secunderabad, East at Malakpet, South at Bandlaguda and West at Tolichowki. The transport department's contact directory lists them, with a driving test track at Nagole. Its licence page points applicants to the office covering their home area, although Section 9(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act has let you apply for a licence to any licensing authority in the state since 2019.

Codes are copied from the department's Reservation Number page, where each office appears with its code. Telangana's state code is now TG. Plates issued before the change, and older guides, show TS, the code used until 2024.
If your address is in Medchal or Rangareddy district rather than Hyderabad district, look at the offices listed for those districts. The directory does not say which localities each office serves. The department's citizen charter, prepared in October 2017, lists localities by zone, so confirm with the office if you live near a boundary.
Telangana licence renewal fees and time limits
Telangana charges the licence fees in Rule 32 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, plus user charges. Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles Act sets how early and how late you can renew.

The Telangana fee page shows the same ₹300 and ₹1,000 amounts for late renewal, using older wording about an application made after the grace period. The department's renewal page adds that user charges are payable on top of the fee.
Time limits
Up to one year before expiry.
This is the earliest you can apply to renew.
From the day it expires.
Stop driving on the old licence. The 2019 amendment ended the 30 day period in which an expired licence stayed valid.
Up to one year after expiry.
You can still renew without a driving test, and Telangana's renewal page says the licence is renewed from its old expiry date.
More than one year after expiry.
The licensing authority must refuse renewal unless you pass the test of competence to drive. The renewal then counts from the date your application is received.
Why a renewal or Form 1A gets sent back
A renewal can be sent back when the Form 1A is out of date, when the wrong form is attached, or when details do not match. Check these points before you upload.
An expired certificate.
Form 1A is valid for six months from issue. An older certificate is out of date, so get a new one.
Form 1 sent in place of Form 1A.
The state forms page offers both. At 40 or above, the doctor's Form 1A is the one you need.
Following the age 50 line.
If you are 40 to 49 and renewing a private licence, you still need Form 1A.
A Form 1A from another application.
Use the one generated for your current application number, and enter that same number on our order form.
Details that do not match.
The doctor will not change your name, address or photo. Correct them on Sarathi before ordering.
A printout at the counter.
The digital copy is for uploading online only.
A licence more than a year past expiry.

My licence expired more than a year ago. Is Form 1A enough?
No. Under Section 15, renewal applied for more than one year after expiry must be refused unless you pass the test of competence to drive. Telangana's renewal page says such a licence is renewed from the date the application is received. If you are 40 or older, you still need Form 1A as well.
