Jammu and Kashmir’s healthcare system faces unique challenges due to its geography and socio-political conditions. The region has 22 district hospitals, 85 sub-district hospitals, and 483 Primary Health Centers (PHCs), but the doctor-to-patient ratio remains below the national average, at 1.9 per 1,000 population. While the region has achieved better-than-average health indicators, such as an Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of 16 per 1,000 live births and a Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 46 per 100,000 live births, non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes are on the rise.

Telemedicine has become a game-changer, bridging healthcare gaps in remote areas. Platforms like eSanjeevani have facilitated over 100,000 teleconsultations, providing access to specialists in cardiology, dermatology, and psychiatry. Mobile Health Units equipped with telemedicine facilities bring diagnostic and consultation services to underserved regions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine ensured continuity of care and reduced the burden on hospitals.

Challenges like poor internet connectivity and low digital literacy persist, but government initiatives under the National Digital Health Mission aim to expand telemedicine services. Future plans include leveraging satellite connectivity and public-private partnerships to improve access. Telemedicine is a vital tool in ensuring equitable healthcare delivery across Jammu and Kashmir.
